HBF: Prefab home building booming

4 April 2008 11:30

Prefabricated properties are increasingly in demand and are often more eco-friendly than more orthodox housing, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has claimed.

The role that non-conventional properties can play in ending Britain's housing shortage is a contended one, with Brian Berry from the Federation of Master Builders recently insisting that traditional home building is what is needed to resolve this issue.

Yet John Slaughter from the HBF has nonetheless observed a rise in the volume of prefabricated properties being built of late, particularly in the area of houses with timber frames that are assembled offsite.

He also explained that these properties are often more environmentally friendly because it is easier to maintain a high standard of insulation and airtight-ness when adhering to specifications in a factory than when putting a house together on a building site.

This type of property previously played an important part in overcoming the shortfall in available homes in bomb-damaged London after the Second World War, with many of these houses then remaining in use for decades after the conflict.
