Homeowners want to improve and move
27 June 2008 11:30
Many homeowners are improving their properties with a view to selling them, according to a new survey, but it is important that they make the enhancements that buyers want.
One in eight property owners are planning on moving house within the next 12 months, Alliance & Leicester's poll showed, with nearly one in five carrying out work on their home with the aim of either increasing its value or of simply making it more saleable.
The most popular way of doing this is redecorating, which over two out of three of these homeowners have done, while three out of five have improved their outdoor space, whereas less than one in six are planning on extending their property.
Yet sellers may be getting their priorities all wrong, as over three out of four buyers make their decision to purchase a property based on how many bedrooms it has, while nearly three out of five want a well-maintained house and almost half want a large kitchen.
Alliance & Leicester's director of mortgages Richard Taylor therefore stressed the need for sellers to know what potential buyers are looking for, while urging both groups to make the right decisions in the current climate and stay within their affordability levels.
