TCPA: Redevelopment to make more homes available

18 March 2008 11:30

Government plans to facilitate rebuilding on brownfield sites can help address the UK housing shortage, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has claimed.

Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in last week's budget that several measures would be taken to boost the redevelopment of derelict land, including increasing remediation relief to expenditure on these locations.

TCPA communications manager Kate Henderson has backed this course of action, noting that many brownfield sites exist in areas where there is not enough housing stock and that many people are relying on the creation of more homes.

She argued that redevelopment should be carried out with the aim of improving the quality of life of the people living and working locally and added that the priority must be on the creation of socially, economically and environmentally sustainable communities.

Ms Henderson also urged construction to be focused on building houses with gardens, explaining that the provision of green spaces is not only integral to making properties more desirable, but it is also central to environmental design.
