Chasing the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre – BBC News

The national Oceanography Centre is leading research in a complex system of oceanic currents known as the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre, which has a profound effect on weather patterns as well as a relation to hurricanes. Researchers are leaving instruments under water which will study the flow and interplay of warm and cold water, in hopes of creating more accurate and predictable weather models and predicting future trends in weather. There is a growing community of international scientists who are engaging in this research, which also involves advanced robotics.
