These are firms which specialise in selling mortgages.
They can be large companies with call centres or small high street shop type outfits.
It used to be the case that anyone could sell mortgages. However the new Financial Services Authority has made it mandatory for mortgage brokers to be qualified.
The main thing to watch out for when buying a mortgage through a broker is that they are genuinely independent and will be able to offer you the best deal rather than going with a few prefered lenders - who, for example, might be paying them more.
The best way to ensure that this is the case is to pay a fee. This is usually £200 or so and could save you many thousands in the long run. Apart from that the brokers would make their money by getting paid by the lender they place your mortgage and insurance with.
It's certainly not a bad idea to use a broker. It's a very complex marketplace and they can save you a lot of hassle by telling you about the best deals quickly.
We have a list of recommended brokers throughout the country who we can put you in contact with click here
If you're suspicious about any broker, contact the regulator, the Financial Services Authority Tel 0845 606 1234.
