Second-home ownership up 30% since 2000, research finds – The Guardian

The number of people owning second homes in the UK has increased 30% since 2000. However, the number of adults owning no property has also risen, creating a larger wealth inequality. Recent data indicates that approximately 10% of adults in the UK own a second home, while around 40% of adults own no property whatsoever. Efforts are being made to curtail the disparity, primarily via an increased stamp duty on second homes throughout the kingdom; changes have also been made in Scotland, where stamp duty no longer exists. The extra revenue could be used to build tens of thousands of homes – which is the only thing that will fix the UK’s failing housing market.
